This first novel by Kate Constable introduces central characters Calwyn and Darrow. Calwyn, apprentice ice priestess of Antaris, has never ventured outside the walls of her world until she rescues Darrow, an injured man with gifts of his own. Their quest entwines different worlds, enchantment, magic, and the theme of good versus evil that drives good fantasy. The well-drawn story, which might seem overlong, sets the stage for Books 2 and 3. While Karen Ziemba's reading individualizes each character, she also seems to strain her voice for a few.
